When I published Enable Abilities for MCP on the official WordPress.org repository, it shipped with 17 abilities. What you’re reading now is the result of several weeks of iteration: 48 abilities organized in 10 categories, with native integration for WooCommerce, The Events Calendar, and the three most-used SEO plugins in the ecosystem: Rank Math, Yoast SEO, and SEOPress.
If you already read the launch post or the comparison with WordPress.com, here you’ll find what’s new: a much more complete API, ready to operate stores, events, and SEO from an AI assistant like Claude.
What changed: from 24 to 48 abilities
The plugin went from 5 to 10 categories. The original categories (Core, Read, Write, SEO Rank Math, Utility) are still there, but now five new functional areas join the mix:
- SEO — SEOPress
- SEO — Yoast SEO
- Custom Post Types
- WooCommerce
- The Events Calendar
It’s still the same free, open source plugin, with no changes to the basic requirements: WordPress 6.9+, PHP 8.0+, and the MCP Adapter plugin installed.
The complete ability set across 10 categories
🔵 Core
The abilities that the WordPress 6.9 core registers and the plugin exposes to MCP:
- Get site information — name, URL, description, language, version
- Get user information — data of the currently authenticated user
- Get environment information — PHP, DB, environment type
📖 Read — Safe queries
- Get posts with filters for status, category, tag, and search
- Get single post with full content, SEO meta, and featured image
- Get categories, tags, pages, comments, media, and users
✏️ Write — Create and modify
- Create, update, and delete posts
- Create categories and tags
- Create pages
- Moderate comments (approve, hold, spam, trash)
- Reply to comments as the authenticated user
- Upload images from external URLs with optional auto-assign as featured image
🔍 SEO — Rank Math
- Get full Rank Math metadata: title, description, keywords, robots, Open Graph, SEO score
- Update Rank Math metadata: SEO title, description, focus keyword, canonical URL, robots, Open Graph, primary category, pillar content
🔍 SEO — SEOPress (NEW)
- Get SEOPress metadata: title, description, focus keyword, robots, canonical, Open Graph, Twitter Card
- Update SEOPress metadata: SEO title, description, focus keyword, canonical URL, robots directives, Open Graph, Twitter Card
🔍 SEO — Yoast SEO (NEW)
- Get Yoast metadata: title, description, focus keyphrase, canonical, robots, Open Graph, Twitter Card
- Update Yoast metadata: SEO title, description, focus keyphrase, canonical URL, robots (noindex, nofollow, advanced), Open Graph, Twitter Card
- Get Yoast sitemap index — fetches and parses the sitemap index, returning all registered sitemap URLs with last modification date
This makes the plugin SEO-agnostic: use whichever you already have installed, without being forced into Rank Math.
🧩 Custom Post Types (NEW)
The full CPT support that was missing. Works with any registered CPT: WooCommerce, ACF, JetEngine, anything:
- List post types — lists all CPTs with their configuration and taxonomies
- Get CPT items with filters, search, and taxonomy queries
- Get CPT item with all meta fields included
- Create, update, and delete CPT items with taxonomy and meta support
- Get CPT taxonomies with their terms
- Assign CPT terms — assign taxonomy terms to an item
🛒 WooCommerce (NEW)
Dedicated abilities using WooCommerce’s native API, HPOS-compatible (High-Performance Order Storage) and formally declared:
- List products with price, SKU, stock, categories, and type
- Get product detail in full: gallery, attributes, and variations
- Update product: price, sale price, stock, and status
- List orders with customer, total, status, and date (HPOS)
- Get order detail: line items, billing/shipping, totals, and notes
- Update order status with optional note
- List customers with email, name, total spent, and order count
🎟️ The Events Calendar (NEW)
Four abilities for one of the most widely used events plugins:
- List events with start/end date, venue, organizer, and date range filter
- Get event detail with resolved venue address and organizer contact
- Create events with title, description, dates, venue, and organizer
- Update events
🔧 Utility
- Search and replace in post content
- Site statistics with CPT counts included
- Update post meta — update any meta field by exact key (with a protected internal key blocklist)
Why it matters: three concrete wins
1. First-class WooCommerce with HPOS
It’s not a wrapper over a generic REST API: the abilities use the native WooCommerce API and formally declare HPOS compatibility. This means your AI assistant can query products, modify prices, update stock, and change order statuses without breaking stores with HPOS active.
2. SEO without forcing you into Rank Math
The plugin used to assume Rank Math. Now it supports the three big ones: Rank Math, Yoast SEO, and SEOPress. Each with a full set of get and update abilities. The plugin detects which one you have installed and only exposes the relevant abilities.
3. Custom Post Types opens the door to the entire ecosystem
The CPT block works with any post type registered on your site. That means if you use ACF for custom structures, JetEngine for complex CPTs, or any plugin that registers CPTs, the abilities will handle them automatically. Meta fields are exposed in full.
Security: what didn’t change
Even though the surface grew significantly, the security model is still the same:
- Capability checks per operation — every ability respects native WordPress capabilities
- Per-post permission validation for edit, delete, and search-replace
- Input sanitization with runtime validation of enums and ranges
- Granular control — every ability has its own toggle from Settings → WP Abilities
- 100% WPCS compliant — zero errors, zero warnings
- API Key authentication with SHA-256 for remote MCP connections
- Internal key blocklist in the new
update post metaability to avoid touching critical core meta fields
What’s next
With WooCommerce, Events Calendar, and generic CPTs covered, the next frontier is observability: activity logs to audit exactly what the AI does on your site, which abilities it uses, on which objects, and with which parameters. It’s what people running the plugin in production have asked for the most.
